USPS officials held a virtual conference this week and approved the renaming of the Dyker Heights Post Office — located at 8320 13th Ave. — to the Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini Post Office.
The celebratory, online event took place on Tuesday, Dec. 22 (Mother Cabrini passed away at age 67 on Dec. 22, 1917).
Last year, U.S. Rep. Max Rose spearheaded legislation to rename the post office. The bill was passed by both houses of Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump, according to the Brooklyn Reporter.
“Today is about honoring a woman, a leader and a saint who never forgot that our north star must be there for those who are most in need,” Rose said. “And not to look for reasons why not, but to look for reasons why. Not to say, ‘Well, they come from there so they’re not one of us. They look differently, so they’re not one of us.’ But to instead, constantly search for and honor and praise the deep interconnectedness that is our shared humanity.”
