Italian American Directors’ Film Holds No. 1 Spot Across the Globe

Plus, Russo Brothers Italian American Filmmaker Forum (RBIAFF) announcement coming soon.

  • The Electric State, released March 14 on Netflix by the Russo Brothers, debuted at no. 1 in 47 countries
  • Sci-fi film no. 1 in viewership for second straight week on Netflix’s Global Top 10, and viewed on more than 50 million Netflix accounts

The Electric State — a sci-fi adventure starring Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt and Stanley Tucci, and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (The Russo Brothers) — is set in an alternate 1990s following a robot rebellion. Within just 10 days of its March 14 release, the film had been viewed on 50 million Netflix accounts and reached the No. 1 spot in more than 50 countries.

Based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel, the film follows a teenage girl (Brown) who discovers that a robot was sent to her by her missing brother. Together, they embark on a journey to find him, navigating a richly imagined world where humans coexist with robots of all kinds.

“We’re creating a fantasy world, but one that’s based on a world you recognize and perhaps even lived through,” said Anthony Russo, in an interview with The New York Times. “Part of delivering that recognizable world is making everything feel real.”

The Russo Brothers, who are lifelong members of Italian Sons and Daughters of America (ISDA) — a leading affiliate group of the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations (COPOMIAO), are now in the UK working on their next blockbuster, Avengers: Doomsday.

The A-list cast includes Patrick Stewart, Robert Downey, Jr., Ian McKellen, Paul Rudd, Chris Hemsworth, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby and many more.

Additionally, the Hollywood directors, in collaboration with ISDA, will soon announce the next slate of emerging artists who will receive grants as part of the 2025 Russo Brothers Italian American Filmmaker Forum (RBIAFF).

RBIAFF, co-founded by ISDA/COPOMIAO President Basil Russo, is a fellowship platform that produces short films based on concepts exploring the Italian American experience.

The 2024 RBIAFF winner, My Kind of People, will be privately screened for all attendees at the 47th ISDA National Convention in Chicago this August, and at COPOMIAO’s annual summit this June.

Avengers: Doomsday will premiere worldwide on May 1, 2026.

Every year, the RBIAFF presents the Renaissance Award to recognize Italian American luminaries in the entertainment industry in celebration of their outstanding contributions.
