The three Pietà sculptures by Renaissance master Michelangelo will be displayed side-by-side for the first time in an exhibition at the Museo Opera del Duomo in Florence, from Feb. 24 until Aug. 1 2022, Wanted in Rome reports.
The exhibition will include the newly-restored original Bandini Pietà, from Florence’s cathedral museum, along with the casts of the Pietà in St Peter’s and the Rondanini Pietà from the Vatican Museums, reports RAI News.
The three works will be displayed as part of the Mediterranean, Frontier of Peace 2022 event. Pope Francis, along with other religious and civic leaders, will attend the Feb. 27 meeting to discuss issues impacting the Mediterranean region.
The most famous Pietà work (seen above) depicts Mary clutching on to Jesus’s body after the Crucifixion. The piece was commissioned for the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères, who was the French ambassador in Rome.
The sculpture, in Carrara marble, was made for the cardinal’s funeral monument, but was moved in the 18th century to its current location in St. Peter’s Basilica.
