Brooklyn Church Heist: $2 Million Gold Tabernacle Stolen
The "irreplaceable" 18-karat gold tabernacle was ripped out of St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church last Friday.
A “brazen crime of disrespect and hate” is how Catholic church officials described the theft of a bejeweled, $2 million tabernacle from one of its parishes in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood.
The solid silver tabernacle, which was coated in 18-karat gold, was ripped out of St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church late last week, and statues of angels flanking the altar were also decapitated.
“This is devastating, as the Tabernacle is the central focus of our church outside of worship, holding the Body of Christ, the Eucharist, which is delivered to the sick and homebound,” Father Frank Tumino, pastor of St. Augustine, said in the statement from the diocese.
Tumino had been on his way to hear confessions at a parish up the street when he passed by St. Augustine and noticed that one of the doors was ajar, according to the Tablet, a publication by the diocese.
He stumbled upon the damage inside the church; in a statement the NYPD said power tools were used to forcibly remove the historic and “irreplaceable” tabernacle.
Police had no leads on potential suspects as of Monday evening and asked anyone with information about the burglary to contact the department’s crime unit.
Tumino speculated that multiple people were involved in the heist, considering the immense weight of the tabernacle.
