As Joey Logano jumped into his No. 22 Ford on Sunday, he told his mechanic “I’m getting in as a driver and getting out as a champion.”
And by the time the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series roared to an end at Florida’s Homestead-Miami Speedway, Logano was, indeed, the champion.
It wasn’t an easy road for the 28-year-old Italian American, who had to outrace NASCAR’s “Big Three”: Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr.
Apart from the elite competition, analysts and race experts didn’t see it coming either: after all, Logano clocked the fewest wins in 2018, and had the worst odds of winning the Cup.
Adversity, it seems, was no match for the fastest kid in U.S. racing.
