Russo Brothers Go Big on the Small Screen with ‘Citadel’

Lifelong members of Italian Sons and Daughters of America (ISDA), Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are connecting cultures with big budget TV project.

Citadel, starring Priyanka Chopra, Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci.

Joe and Anthony Russo are going big on the small screen with Citadel, a groundbreaking spy thriller that’s connecting audiences and cultures from across the globe like never before.

The $200 million TV project, bankrolled by Amazon Studios, follows an unprecedented production concept, where several Citadel spin-offs — now being filmed around the world — will intricately feed into the U.S. version that premiered this past Friday on Prime Video.

For instance, there will be a Citadel: Italy and a Citadel: India, among others, that fully utilize casts, crews, languages and locales from those countries.

“We’ve had the good fortune of being able to tell stories that travel around the globe, and we’ve seen the effect that those can have on audiences,” said Anthony Russo in a recent interview with The New York Times. “But those were Hollywood-centric narratives that traveled. The idea that we could create a story that not only traveled around the world but was created around the world seemed like a very exciting movement forward.”

For the past 9 years, the Russo Brothers have been the most successful movie Directors in the world. Their films have grossed $7 billion at the box office, and have been viewed by 1 billion people — far more than any other Director.

The Russo Brothers are executive producers on the sprawling project, which is already garnering highly positive reviews from audiences.

Their sister, Angela Russo Otstot, is the President of Creative at their Hollywood studio, AGBO, which produced Citadel. The Brothers were also the producers of the Academy Award-winning Best Picture, Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Meaningful Depictions of the Italian American Experience

Proud advocates of their Italian heritage, the Russo Brothers are lifelong members of Italian Sons and Daughters of America (ISDA), and six years ago they founded The Russo Brothers Italian American Film Forum, which, to date, has provided 48 grants to independent filmmakers who have created movies that depict the Italian American experience in positive ways.

Anthony and Joe are the sons of Basil & Patricia Russo. Basil currently serves as National President of Italian Sons and Daughters of America and President of the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations (COPOMIAO).
