Second-Home Buyers in the US Are Pouring Into Italy’s Wine Country

Piedmont, a region of Italy bordering France and Switzerland, sits at the foot of the Alps. It’s known for sophisticated cuisine and wines such as Barolo.

When it comes to purchasing a second residence, American homebuyers are seeking properties far beyond U.S. shores.

Naturally, many of these folks are flocking to Italy — specifically the northern region of Piedmont — home to prized Barolo wines and precious white truffles, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Diletta Giorgolo Spinola, the head of residential sales at Italy Sotheby’s International Realty, estimates that the number of Americans asking about the area had surged about 50 percent at her agency alone over the past two years.

Along with its reputation in the wine world, Piedmont was instrumental in the creation of the slow-food movement.

Additionally, Americans are snapping up bargain homes across Sicily and southern Italy, as local leaders continue to leverage big incentives in order to repopulate and revive small cities and towns.
