It’s a huge week for Italian American filmmakers in Hollywood as the Russo Brothers and Sopranos’ creator David Chase begin to promote their major releases, which are due out in the coming weeks and months, respectively.
On Wednesday, Warner Bros. unveiled footage of The Many Saints of Newark, which shows Michael Gandolfini — son of the late actor James Gandolfini — as the young Tony Soprano.
The film is set in the explosive era of the Newark riots, when rival gangsters began to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over Jersey. The cast also includes Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen and Ray Liotta, according to Variety,
The mobster drama will be released on Sept, 24, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max.
Then there’s The Russo Brothers new visionary film, Cherry, a true story based on an army medic (Tom Holland), who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and becomes a serial bank robber after an addiction to drugs puts him in debt.
Much of the film was shot in Cleveland, Ohio — Joe and Anthony Russo’s hometown, and it was adapted from a New York Times bestseller.
The film is due out in theaters on Feb. 26, and it will be released on Apple+ on March 12.
The Russo Brothers are lifelong members of Italian Sons and Daughters of America (ISDA).
